In September, Old Fashioned releases in Brazil (dubbed in Portuguese). See the trailer here. The film will continue to expand into additional foreign territories.

The U.S. DVD release for Old Fashioned is June 16, 2015. It is available in a variety stores and online retailers, including Amazon (where the film briefly held the #1 Romance DVD position over all titles).

Old Fashioned, Rik's feature-film directing debut, hits theatres nationwide (limited release) on Friday, Feb. 13, as a Valentine's Day counter-programmer against Fifty Shades of Grey. This David v. Goliath stand-off caused an online media storm in late 2014 and caught the attention of both Time and Variety (among many others).

Tyndale House has published two books inspired by the film Old Fashioned (both based on Rik's screenplay). One book is a novelization of the film (written by Rene Gutteridge) and the other is the official companion to the novelization/film (written by Ginger Kolbaba). In July, Variety and Time both announced the theatrical release of Old Fashioned on Valentine's Day weekend 2015, pitting the indie in a David v. Two books inspired by the film Old Fashioned (both based on Rik's screenplay) are being published by Tyndale House. Ebooks release on September 1, 2014, and print copies will be available in mid-January 2015, closer to the film's theatrical release. On January 18 & 19, Old Fashioned, Rik's feature-film directing debut, was honored with a black-tie gala and an 1,100 seat sold-out "sneak peek" advance preview screening in New Philadelphia, Ohio (as a thank you to the community where the film was shot). Rik re-acquires the rights to his original screenplay, Old Fashioned, and options it to Skoche Films. More information »

Rik begins work on the second of two commissioned screenplays, a currently untitled Christmas Project (dramedy), and the other script in that deal, I Do (romantic-comedy), remains in active development as well.

Bishmalachooga and Illuminarium, the final two HD shorts directed by Rik, and produced by Aaron B. Smith (Dusk Films) as part of Compass Film Academy’s “Pro Shoot” series (hands-on education for film students), both screen at the Flickerings Film Festival in Bushnell, Illinois.  Illuminarium also screens at the Imago Film Festival in Elgin, Illinois.

Rik serves on the Short Film Jury for the 2008 Heartland Film Festival; he is also invited to lead the inaugural one-day program for the newly launched Heartland Truly Moving Pictures Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. More information »

2005

Rik is commissioned as a “script doctor” for Secret of the Cave, a family film to be shot on location in Ireland.

Rik teams up with director Harold Cronk and writes the visionary screenplay for War Prayer, a short film loosely based on a short story by Mark Twain.

As part of an educational initiative in Michigan, Rik is brought in to direct a trilogy of HD short films (Michigan Sky, Loaded, Art Appreciation) for Compass Academy’s “Pro Shoot” series.  All of the films are produced by Grand Rapids-based filmmaker Aaron B. Smith (Dusk Films).  Post-production services are provided by Douglas S. Nagel, also of Grand Rapids.

Rik serves as a creative consultant on a short film series (Potluck) produced in central Florida.

The Least of These screens in Paris, France, scores a distribution deal on Frontier Airlines, and goes on to become a finalist in the Cloud 9 Film Festival as well as winning four awards at the annual ICVM conference. More information »

Rik is commissioned to write Maneater, a dark romantic-comedy script based on an existing work.

Tony & Agnes & the Power of a Good Story, an interview between Rik and Tony Campolo, is completed and included on the DVD release of The Least of These.
